How did you guys meet?

Shawn and I usually tell people we met in college, which is true. We didn’t however meet on campus, or downtown or at church. Here’s the real story …

My best friend and roommate (Jamie!) and I were sitting in our apartment one night contemplating how out of all the 10,000 guys on campus, the odds are that there was the perfect one among the numbers. After we went back to our separate bedrooms I started thinking about that fact. “There must to be tons of guys who would be perfect for me!” I thought. “If only I could find one of them!”

I logged onto Facebook and did a search. I waited with anticipation for the results … how many matches would I have? 100? 200?

One.

“What on earth!?” I thought. “I really need to lower my bar!” But I took a look at the one guy regardless. Shawn Adams. Red hair, big smile. So I messaged him and said hello. We emailed each other 3 and 4 times daily after that and finally set up a first date on August 26, 2006. – The rest is history!

What are our professions?

Shawn: “Family Centered Specialist: I spend my time working with families that have troubled youth to retain the integrity of the nuclear family. This job achieves a great mix between social work and counseling.”

Perry: "Historic Preservationist: While it isn’t the most well known profession, I’ve spent the last few years pursuing a career as a professional preservationist. Preservationists work as advocates for the historic built environment, or in other words – we help save, protect and restore all of those beautiful old buildings that are scattered across the countryside and near urban city centers.

How did he propose?

Shawn and I had decided around Christmas time 2008 that we would take a trip to Charleston over spring my break. I had developed an interest in the area because of it is where Historic Preservation in the United States really began. After getting to Charleston on Friday, I interviewed for an internship with the Historic Charleston Foundation (historiccharlestonfoundation.org) and we headed to see Drayton Hall and a number of other sites. On Saturday before dinner Shawn insisted we take a walk around Middleton Plantation because he wanted a picture of us in front of the Middleton Oak! Once we got there we realized there was no where to set up the camera! Shawn saw an elderly couple walking nearby and ran over to get one of them to take our photo (he was actually telling them he was about to propose and to snap a picture!). I readied myself for the photo, but Shawn was facing me instead. I looked at him and he began telling me how much he loved me and got down on his knee and asked “Will you marry me??” I screamed yes and we floated on cloud 9 the rest of the weekend!
